Transfer machine headblocks for film sound in synchronisation with 16 or 35mm cine film.

3 Otari headblocks with Otari heads are for a special purpose.

All are different but are designed for the same purpose.

They are intended to be used as transfer machine headblocks for film sound in synchronisation with 16 or 35mm cine film.

The synchronisation took one of two forms/systems:

FM pilot (a single centre track between the stereo tracks of a 2/2 stereo system) or a full track recording and NeoPilot (a twin track recording of sync waveform, again in the centre of the 1 inch recordings, but with the two tracks recording the same sync signal but being out of phase of each other so that when replayed on a full track head they cancel and therefore are inaudible).

The three headblocks carry differing heads in three configurations, each detailed on the sheet and now marked on the blocks themselves.

The original sound recordings are recorded on location on Nagra tape machines, so these headblocks are for use (on an Otari machine in the transfer studio) with the sync pulse generated in the film camera – this pulse system being used to keep the original film picture and sound in synchronisation.

These three very special headblocks are designed for the transfer house to be able to match whatever synchronisation system was on the original Nagra sound recordings.

This saved the necessity of the transfer house to have a selection of Nagra machines to cover whatever synchronising system was used.

Nowadays they will be valuable to archive houses but need the appropriate Otari tape machine for which they were designed.

These heads are very rare nowadays.

All heads on the three blocks were slightly worn so all the heads have been re-lapped and the blocks realigned so they are now as good as new.
