Telefunken Elektroakustik U47 – custom build with original Telefunken VF14M valve (ex-Polar Studios, Stockholm)

This U47 was commissioned directly from Telefunken Elektroakustik in Connecticut in 2013 and built around a genuine Telefunken VF14M valve, rather than the VF14K fitted to standard production models.

The VF14M came from Polar Studios in Stockholm. The studio bought it as a spare with its Neumann U47 in 1975 and kept it in its original box until it was sold to the current owner. It has been used only a handful of times since the build.

The microphone is fitted with a Neumann KK47 capsule and paired with a vintage power supply. Telefunken calibrated the PSU to this specific microphone and valve during the build, so the system was set up to work as a matched whole. The owner describes the sound as exceptional.

Provenance and documentation

• Original 2013 build invoice from Telefunken Elektroakustik
• Correspondence from Telefunken’s production team on delivery, confirming the mic was built around a real VF14M valve

Included

• Telefunken U47 (custom nameplate, “Nr. VF14m”)
• Neumann KK47 capsule (installed)
• Vintage power supply, calibrated to this mic and valve
• Multicore mic cable
• Spider shock mount
• Telefunken wooden mic box
• Fitted hard carry case

Optional extra: Thiersch Blueline M7 capsule

The mic was originally built with a Thiersch Blueline M7, which can be supplied mounted in a second U47 head. The heads swap in minutes by removing three screws, giving two voices from one mic. The Thiersch M7 has a fuller, meatier sound, while the KK47 is brighter. Price on request.
